Frequently Asked Questions
What is counselling?
At its core, counselling is about building a trusting relationship with a trained professional who listens with empathy and respect. It isn’t about telling you what to do. Instead, together, we make sense of what’s happening in your inner world, explore challenges, uncover patterns, and discover new ways of understanding you and your life.
Don’t you have to have something bad happen to you to need counselling?
There are many myths about who therapy is "for"—and it's time to gently challenge them. Therapy is not only for those who’ve faced the most painful, traumatic, or unjust experiences (though if that’s you, you are deeply welcome here).
The truth is, therapy is for anyone who wants to understand themselves more deeply. You don’t need to reach a breaking point to seek support. If you’re simply curious about yourself, wanting to feel more connected, or needing someone to talk to and really be heard—then therapy might be for you.
How often should I come to counselling?
Weekly sessions are often recommended to maintain continuity and momentum, but I understand that this isn’t always possible. Fortnightly or monthly sessions are also available, depending on what feels manageable and right for you
How many counselling sessions will I need?
We don’t set a fixed number of sessions. I work in an open-ended way because I believe that growth unfolds differently for each person—and it can’t be rushed or neatly contained within a set timeframe. You’re free to continue for as long as it feels helpful, and you’ll always be the one to decide when it’s time to pause or end.
Are sessions confidential?
Yes, absolutely. What you share in our sessions is treated with the utmost confidentiality. There are a few rare exceptions to this—primarily to ensure your safety or the safety of others—but these will be clearly outlined in our agreement and fully discussed with you if they ever arise. More information can be found within the NCPS’s Confidentiality Policy.
How much does counselling cost?
Each session is £50 and I offer discounts for block bookings. Please reach out for more information.
Do I need to sign a contract?
Yes. In line with the NCPS Code of Ethics, having a contract is an important part of our work together. It helps to establish how we’ll work, set clear boundaries, and create a shared understanding of the therapeutic relationship. It also gives you clarity on what to expect from our sessions—and offers guidance on what to do if, at any point, you feel that something isn’t quite working for you.
